The governing board of the prestigious performing arts venue has decided to change its name the Trump-Kennedy Center, per an announcement by the White House.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated on social media that the board's decision was unanimous, crediting "the extraordinary job President Trump has done over the last year in saving the building."
"This will be a truly great team long into the future! The building will no doubt attain new levels of prestige and accomplishment," Leavitt noted.
The proposed move is expected to be extremely contentious, notably in Washington, D.C., where the center has been an beloved institution since its construction and dedication for President John F. Kennedy.
Background of the Venue
Soon after assuming the presidency, President Donald Trump dismissed all the center's existing board members and appointed allies in their positions. The reconstituted board subsequently voted to elect Trump chairman.
The president helped procure approximately $257 million in appropriated money to cover major renovations and associated costs at the national venue.
